The challenge

Airex Energy produces biocoal and other biomass products. Its old site relied on green colour blocks and images of budding plants, which felt dated and disconnected from the actual product. The goal was to modernize the site, showcase the new facilities and make the biocarbonization process easier to understand.

The approach

  1. Research & wireframes

Most of the content was already in place, so the work focused on the visual redesign. I noted what worked on the existing site and what didn’t, found clearer ways to present the information, then wireframed and prototyped every page, refining it with client and team feedback.

  2. Colour & type

Charcoal and white became the dominant colours, which felt more professional and closer to the product, with the logo’s green saved for calls to action. Barlow, a slightly rounded sans serif, reflects the softer, organic side of green energy.

  3. Design

Rounded buttons, minimal colour and a custom abstract icon set for the different coal products and processes. I simplified the illustrations and charts and retouched the client’s photos for use as backgrounds.

  4. Video

For the homepage header, I cut a background video in After Effects from the client’s footage, colour-correcting the shots for smooth transitions. When the client later asked to make their own customers’ products less recognizable, I added moving masks to obscure them.

The outcome

After one round of quality assurance across browsers and phones, the redesigned site launched with a cleaner look and a clearer explanation of how biocoal is made.
